We lost one of America’s greatest-ever musicians and arts champions last week. Yup, “Bubbles” is what they called her, from infancy … ’cause Beverly Sills was one of the most relentlessly cheerful folks out there. She was also a spectacular coloratura soprano, and America’s pioneering home-grown operatic diva: one of the first to buck the going trend of making one’s name in Europe before daring to claim stardom. Click HERE to hear her at her glittering best. After she stopped singing, she went on to become her nation’s most successful arts administrator and all-around cultural advocate.
Forgive my belated post — but I didn’t want to jump the gun on my printed tribute to Sills in this week’s CP issue — right HERE. Besides, Patrick’s already blogged about her over in Unscripted. She was also something of a gay icon — click HERE to read one of many swishy tributes.
Thanks for everything, Bubbles — you made a big difference.
