Robert has blogging rights to the marvelous second Chamber program at Dock Street (I was there, too – sigh!). It contained the first installment of Charles Wadsworth’s tribute to the composers who made good creative use of the MacDowell Colony’s serene natural environment.
But know that Program III – beginning at 1:00 p.m. Monday the 28th and continuing through Tuesday – will finish off the MacDowell honors with the music of four composers who found inspiration there. But not until they get Debussy’s tantalizing Danses Sacree et Profane (harp and string quartet) out of the way.
The MacDowell alums begin with Ned Rorem, whose captivating waltz, Paris Then (clarinet/piano), will be heard. Then comes part of Aaron Copland’s Duo (flute & piano), followed the ‘Autumn’ and ‘Spring’ movements – (for violin, cello & piano) of Astor Piazzola’s The Seasons. Finally, we’ll hear movements 2 and 3 of the well-known Dreams & Prayers of Isaac the Blind, from one of the best-known of modern masters: Osvaldo Golijov.
What gives? I’ve seen empty seats (though not many) at the first two programs. There may be some hope, if you’ve been turned back at the Gaillard box office. Cruise by close to concert time and try your luck.
